What Does "Rebottled" Mean?
A rebottled IBC tank is an intermediate bulk container where the inner HDPE bottle has been replaced with a brand-new, factory-manufactured bottle while retaining the original steel cage and pallet base. The concept is straightforward: the steel cage of an IBC has a useful life of 15-20 years or more, but the plastic bottle that holds the liquid may only last 5-7 years before it needs replacement due to chemical degradation, UV damage, staining, or cross-contamination concerns.
Rebottling allows the most expensive and durable component -- the welded galvanized steel cage -- to continue its service life while providing a fresh, uncontaminated interior surface for the next user. The new bottle is blow-molded from virgin FDA-compliant HDPE resin, identical in material and manufacturing quality to the bottle in a brand-new IBC. Fresh valves, caps, and gaskets complete the assembly.
The result is a container that offers the interior cleanliness and chemical purity of a new IBC at a significantly lower price point. Because the steel cage accounts for approximately 40-50% of a new IBC's manufacturing cost, reusing it generates substantial savings that are passed directly to the buyer. Rebottled IBCs are also an environmentally responsible choice, as they prevent perfectly functional steel cages from entering the scrap stream prematurely.
The Rebottling Process
Our rebottling operation follows a rigorous six-step process to ensure every unit meets or exceeds the quality standards of a factory-new IBC.
Cage Inspection & Grading
Every incoming steel cage is inspected for structural integrity. We check weld joints, cross-members, corner posts, and the lifting frame for cracks, corrosion, or deformation. Cages that fail inspection are recycled as scrap steel rather than rebottled.
Cage Cleaning & Repair
Accepted cages are power-washed to remove dirt, labels, and residue. Minor rust is treated with wire brushing and zinc-rich primer. Bent cross-members are straightened or replaced. The cage is repainted or re-galvanized if needed.
Old Bottle Removal
The used HDPE bottle is carefully removed from the cage. The old bottle is sent to our recycling facility where it is shredded, washed, and pelletized for use in non-food-contact plastic products like drainage pipe, landscape edging, and parking bumpers.
New Bottle Installation
A factory-fresh, blow-molded HDPE bottle is installed into the refurbished cage. The bottle is manufactured from virgin FDA-compliant resin and meets all applicable UN/DOT specifications. The fit is precision-matched to the cage dimensions.
Valve & Cap Assembly
A brand-new 2-inch butterfly valve and 6-inch screw cap with fresh gaskets are installed. All seals are tested for leak-free operation. The valve is torqued to factory specifications.
Pallet Base Inspection
The pallet base (steel, HDPE, or wood composite) is inspected for flatness, fork pocket integrity, and load-bearing capacity. Damaged pallets are replaced with new or refurbished units. The completed IBC is pressure-tested and tagged with a new date code.
Rebottled vs. Reconditioned vs. Brand New
Understanding the differences between these three options helps you choose the right IBC for your application and budget. Here is a comprehensive side-by-side comparison.
When Rebottled Is the Right Choice
Food & Beverage Storage
The virgin HDPE bottle provides a completely clean interior with no risk of contamination from previous contents. Rebottled IBCs are FDA-compliant and suitable for storing potable water, juice concentrates, syrups, cooking oils, and other food products.
Pharmaceutical & Cosmetics
Industries that require documented material purity but do not need the full traceability chain of a brand-new IBC find rebottled units ideal. The new bottle eliminates leachate concerns while the refurbished cage keeps costs manageable.
Sensitive Chemical Storage
When the chemical being stored is incompatible with residual traces from unknown previous contents, the new bottle in a rebottled IBC provides a safe starting point without the expense of a brand-new container.
Budget-Conscious Operations
If a reconditioned IBC does not meet your cleanliness requirements but a brand-new unit exceeds your budget, the rebottled option sits perfectly in between. You get new-bottle quality at 40-50% less than full new-IBC pricing.
Multi-Trip / Refill Programs
Companies that send IBCs out for refilling and return use rebottled units to start each cycle with a pristine interior. The robust refurbished cage can handle the repeated forklift handling and transport stress of a multi-trip program.
Sustainability Goals
Organizations committed to reducing their environmental footprint choose rebottled IBCs to extend the life of steel cages that would otherwise be scrapped. It is one of the most impactful ways to reduce the embodied carbon of your packaging supply chain.
Available Sizes & Pricing

Cage Rejection Criteria
Not every used cage qualifies for rebottling. We reject cages that exhibit any of the following conditions to ensure the finished product meets our quality standards:
- Cracked or broken weld joints on corner posts or cross-members
- Significant corrosion (more than surface rust) on structural members
- Deformation of the top lifting frame that prevents stacking
- Missing or damaged fork pockets on the pallet base
- Signs of fire damage, heat exposure, or chemical attack on steel
- Cage dimensions outside tolerance (more than 1/4" deviation)
- Damaged or non-functional drain plug on the pallet base
Environmental Impact
Manufacturing a new IBC cage requires approximately 55-65 lbs of galvanized steel, consuming significant energy in mining, smelting, forming, welding, and galvanizing. By reusing the cage, rebottling diverts this steel from the scrap stream and avoids the associated carbon emissions.
The old HDPE bottle removed during rebottling is not wasted either. It is shredded, washed, and pelletized into post-consumer recycled HDPE that manufacturers use for non-food-contact products. This closed-loop approach means that virtually every component of the original IBC finds a second life -- either as part of the rebottled unit or as recycled raw material.
Choosing a rebottled IBC over a brand-new unit reduces the carbon footprint of your container by an estimated 35-45%, primarily through steel reuse. For operations purchasing dozens or hundreds of IBCs annually, the cumulative environmental benefit is substantial.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a rebottled IBC considered "new" or "used" for regulatory purposes?
A rebottled IBC is classified as a "remanufactured" or "reconditioned" container under UN/DOT regulations. It receives a new UN certification mark that includes the reconditioner's identification and the date of rebottling. For DOT hazmat transport, a rebottled IBC must be recertified within 2.5 years of the rebottling date and every 2.5 years thereafter.
How many times can a steel cage be rebottled?
A well-maintained galvanized steel cage can typically be rebottled 3-5 times over its useful life, provided it passes structural inspection each time. This gives a single cage a potential service life of 20-30 years, compared to the 5-7 years for a single HDPE bottle.
Can I request a specific bottle color for my rebottled IBC?
Standard rebottled IBCs come with a natural (translucent white) HDPE bottle, which allows visual level monitoring. Black (UV-opaque) bottles are available by special order for light-sensitive contents. Other colors may be available for large-quantity orders with sufficient lead time.
What is the lead time for rebottled IBC orders?
Standard rebottled IBCs in 275-gallon size are typically available within 5-10 business days. Custom orders, non-standard sizes, or large-volume orders may require 2-3 weeks. We recommend ordering at least 2 weeks in advance of your need date to ensure availability.
