What Is an IBC Tote?
An Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) tote is a reusable industrial container designed for the storage and transport of bulk liquids and granulated materials. Built with a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) inner bottle encased in a tubular galvanized steel cage, IBC totes sit on an integrated pallet base that allows easy handling with forklifts and pallet jacks. The standard design includes a 6-inch screw cap on top for filling and a 2-inch butterfly valve at the bottom for controlled dispensing.
IBC totes were introduced in the 1990s as a more efficient alternative to 55-gallon drums. A single 275-gallon IBC replaces five drums while using 35% less floor space and dramatically reducing handling time. They are UN/DOT rated for transporting both hazardous and non-hazardous materials, and their stackable design allows two-high storage to double your warehouse capacity.
At Omaha IBC Tanks, we specialize in sourcing, inspecting, and reselling used IBC totes that have plenty of life left in them. Every container passes our multi-point inspection before it reaches your facility, ensuring you get reliable performance at a fraction of the cost of buying new.
IBC Tank Anatomy
Understanding the components of an IBC tote helps you make informed purchasing decisions. Here is a detailed breakdown of every major part.
HDPE Bottle (Inner Container)
The core of the IBC tote is a blow-molded bottle made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE). This food-safe, UV-resistant, and chemically inert plastic forms the liquid containment vessel. Wall thickness ranges from 2.0 to 2.5 mm depending on the manufacturer. The HDPE is translucent white when new, allowing visual level monitoring. It resists most acids, bases, and organic solvents, making it suitable for a wide range of liquid storage applications.
Steel Cage (Outer Frame)
The tubular galvanized steel cage provides structural support and protection for the HDPE bottle. It enables stacking (typically 2-high when filled), protects against impact during transport, and provides attachment points for labeling and handling. The cage is welded at every joint and hot-dip galvanized to prevent corrosion. Standard cage tubes are 25mm diameter with 1.5mm wall thickness.
Pallet Base
The integrated pallet base allows handling with standard forklifts and pallet jacks. Most IBC pallets are either steel, wood, or composite (plastic/wood hybrid). The standard footprint is 48" x 40" — identical to a standard shipping pallet — ensuring compatibility with existing warehouse racking, truck beds, and loading docks. Four-way forklift entry allows handling from any direction.
Butterfly Valve (Bottom Discharge)
The 2-inch NPS butterfly valve at the bottom of the IBC allows controlled discharge of contents. A quarter-turn handle opens and closes the valve for quick filling and dispensing. The valve body is typically polypropylene or HDPE with a stainless steel disc and EPDM or PTFE seal. Adapters are available to connect to hoses, pumps, and dispensing systems of various thread types.
6-Inch Screw Cap (Top Fill)
The top opening features a 6-inch diameter screw cap with a gasket seal for filling, cleaning access, and venting. The cap threads onto a molded collar on the HDPE bottle. A vented cap option is available for applications that require pressure equalization during dispensing. The wide opening accommodates fill hoses, dip tubes, and cleaning wands.

Quality Grades
Every used IBC tote we sell is categorized by its previous contents and current condition. Choose the grade that matches your intended application and budget.
Food Grade
Most PopularPreviously used to store food-safe liquids such as juices, syrups, cooking oils, or food-grade chemicals. These totes are thoroughly cleaned and inspected to ensure they meet FDA-compliant standards for non-hazardous food storage. Ideal for agricultural irrigation, livestock watering, potable water storage, and food processing facilities.
Visual Condition Description:
These totes present a clean, translucent white HDPE bottle with minimal discoloration. The interior is visibly clear after our triple-wash process, free of residue, staining, or odor. The steel cage is straight and rust-free with intact welds at every joint. Labels from the original food-grade contents may have been removed, leaving a smooth surface. The butterfly valve operates smoothly and the top cap gasket provides a firm, leak-free seal.
Common Uses:
Industrial Grade
Best ValueSourced from manufacturing environments where they stored non-hazardous industrial liquids such as detergents, lubricants, glycol, or water-based solutions. These containers are in good structural condition with intact cages and functional valves. Perfect for general manufacturing, parts washing, coolant storage, and non-critical fluid handling.
Visual Condition Description:
Industrial grade totes show light to moderate cosmetic wear on the HDPE bottle — slight yellowing from UV exposure or faint tinting from previous contents. The interior is clean and free of heavy residue after our wash process, though minor staining may be visible on the walls. The steel cage is structurally sound with surface oxidation possible on older units. All valves and caps are functional. These totes are fully serviceable for non-food applications.
Common Uses:
Chemical Grade
Lowest PricePreviously held chemical products including solvents, acids, or other specialty chemicals. These totes are inspected for structural integrity but may contain residual odor or staining. Priced at the lowest tier, they are excellent for non-sensitive applications where previous chemical contact is acceptable.
Visual Condition Description:
Chemical grade totes show visible signs of their working history — moderate to heavy discoloration of the HDPE bottle, potential staining from previous chemical contents, and possible residual odor. The bottle wall thickness is verified to be within safe operating range. The steel cage may show surface rust but maintains full structural load capacity. Valves are tested for operation; some may require replacement depending on chemical exposure history. These totes are thoroughly inspected but sold for non-sensitive, non-food applications only.

Stacking & Storage Guidelines
Proper stacking maximizes your storage capacity while maintaining safety. Follow these guidelines for all IBC tote storage scenarios.
| Scenario | Max Stack | Load per Tote | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Filled totes (liquid) | 2 high | Up to 2,880 lbs | Bottom tote must be on level, solid surface. Check cage condition before stacking. |
| Empty totes (storage) | 3-4 high | N/A (empty) | Nest bottles inside cages when possible to reduce footprint. |
| Mixed loads (filled + empty) | 2 high total | Varies | Filled tote always on bottom. Never stack empty on a filled tote with unsupported cage. |
| Racking storage | Per rack rating | Per rack capacity | Use IBC-compatible racking systems rated for liquid loads. Containment tray recommended. |
| Transport (flatbed/truck) | 2 high filled | Per DOT rating | Secure with straps. Valve facing inward/up. Ensure weight does not exceed axle rating. |
Why Buy Used IBC Totes?
Save 50-70% Compared to New
A new IBC tote costs $300-$500. Our used totes start well under $200, delivering the same storage capacity and structural integrity at a dramatically lower price point. For businesses buying in volume, the savings add up to thousands of dollars.
Environmentally Responsible
Each reused IBC tote keeps roughly 130 pounds of HDPE plastic out of the waste stream and avoids the 58 kg of CO2 emissions that manufacturing a new container produces. Buying used is one of the simplest ways to reduce your operational carbon footprint.
Same Structural Performance
HDPE plastic and galvanized steel are built to last. A well-maintained IBC tote can be reused 5-7 times before the materials degrade. Our inspection process ensures every tote we sell still meets its original performance specifications.
Immediately Available
New IBC totes can have lead times of 4-8 weeks depending on the manufacturer. Our used inventory is stocked and ready for immediate pickup or delivery. Need 50 totes by Friday? We can make that happen.
Our Inspection Process
Every used IBC tote that enters our facility goes through a rigorous multi-point inspection before it is approved for resale. We do not sell containers that fail any step of this process.
Visual Inspection
Check for cracks, UV damage, discoloration, and cage deformation. Reject totes with significant structural issues.
Valve & Cap Test
Test the butterfly valve for proper operation and leak-free closure. Inspect the top cap threading and gasket seal.
Cage Integrity
Examine the steel cage for rust, bent bars, broken welds, and proper alignment with the HDPE bottle.
Pallet Check
Verify the pallet base is not cracked, warped, or missing runners. Ensure forklift pockets are clear and functional.
